Chhath is an ancient religious, cultural, and historical Hindu ceremony that is indigenous to the Indian subcontinent. The ceremony is usually celebrated on the span of four days, and comprises various scrupulous rituals, including refraining from drinking water, fasting, and holy bathing – no idol worshipping is involved, however. The day is observed to honor the Sun and the goddess Chhathi Maiya for bestowing life on earth and fulfilling particular wishes.
