Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pasha

Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pasha, Ottoman general and politician, 182nd Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire (b. 1713)

Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pasha, also widely known as Hasan Pasha of Algiers, was a towering figure in the late 18th-century Ottoman Empire, leaving an indelible mark through his distinguished military and administrative career. Born in 1713, his life spanned a significant period of both internal change and external challenge for the empire, concluding with his passing on March 19, 1790.

A formidable military leader, Hasan Pasha rose through the ranks as a general before achieving the pinnacle of naval command. He served as the Ottoman Grand Admiral, or Kapudan Pasha, for a remarkable two decades, from 1770 to 1790. This esteemed position placed him at the helm of the imperial navy, a critical role in an empire with extensive maritime borders and interests. His tenure as Kapudan Pasha was a testament to his strategic prowess and leadership on the high seas. Demonstrating his versatility and the Sultan's immense trust, he briefly ascended to the highest administrative office in the empire, serving as Grand Vizier in 1790, an appointment that underscored his influence and capabilities beyond naval command. Hasan Pasha's career epitomized the power and influence wielded by top military and political figures during this pivotal era in Ottoman history.
