Michael P. Murphy

Michael P. Murphy, American lieutenant, Medal of Honor recipient (d. 2005)
Michael Patrick Murphy (May 7, 1976 – June 28, 2005) was a United States Navy SEAL officer renowned for his heroic actions during the War in Afghanistan. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the U.S. government—becoming the first U.S. Navy service member to earn this distinction since the Vietnam War. In addition to the Medal of Honor, Murphy was also awarded the Silver Star (which was subsequently upgraded) and the Purple Heart in recognition of his extraordinary courage and sacrifice.
Born and raised in Suffolk County, New York, Murphy was known from an early age for his strong sense of duty, academic excellence, and leadership skills. He graduated with honors from Pennsylvania State University, where he earned dual bachelor’s degrees in political science and psychology. Deeply committed to serving his country, Murphy accepted a commission in the United States Navy following graduation and, in July 2002, completed the rigorous training required to become a Navy SEAL.
Murphy served with distinction in the Global War on Terror, undertaking multiple missions that demonstrated his discipline, tactical skill, and dedication to his fellow servicemen. On June 28, 2005, while serving as the leader of a four-man SEAL reconnaissance team tasked with a covert operation high in the Hindu Kush mountains near Asadabad, Afghanistan, Murphy and his team were ambushed by a significantly larger Taliban force. In an act of selfless bravery, Murphy deliberately exposed himself to enemy fire to radio for help and provide his team's coordinates—an action that cost him his life but saved the life of at least one teammate. This valorous act is widely known through the military operation titled “Operation Red Wings,” which was later depicted in the book and film Lone Survivor.
To honor his legacy and selfless sacrifice, several institutions and landmarks have been named after him. Notably, the U.S. Navy commissioned the USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112), an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer launched in 2011. Numerous parks, schools, and military training facilities also bear his name, preserving the memory of his exemplary service.
