It is a Jewish Feast of the Maccabees, the Feast of Consecration or the Festival of Lights Hanukkah is also spelled as Chanukah. In Hebrew, Chanukah means “dedication”.
Chanukah’s story started in 167 B.C when the Jerusalem was being ruled over by the Greek Empire. The Jews were forced to leave and reject their religion and instead worship the Greek Gods by King Antiochus the 4th. This resulted in a revolt by the Jews and Judas Macabeus was appointed as the leader. So this holiday honors the restoration of the temple in Jerusalem while fighting against the Greeks for three whole years.
